Demurrage/Detention

Demurrage is a charge levied by the shipping line to the importer in cases where they have not taken delivery of the full container and move it out of the port/terminal area for unpacking within the allowed line free days.

Demurrage refers to the extra charges paid to a carrier by a shipper or consignee when loading and/or unloading has not been completed within the specified time i.e. delaying the carrier’s cargo beyond the allowed free time.

Detention is a charge levied by the shipping line to the importer in cases where they have taken the full container for unpacking (let’s say within the free days) but have not returned the empty container to the nominated depot before the expiry of the allowed line free days.

Detention is the same as demurrage except that instead of applying to delays in cargo, detention applies to delays in equipment.

Demurrage is applicable to cargo (while the cargo is in the container)

Detention relates to equipment (while the container is empty after unpacking or before packing)

Demurrage Tariff is defined as the charge levied by the carrier to the customers for the storage of the containers after the allowed free days of storage. For example, the demurrage tariff is applied to the customers if they have not taken delivery of the container for unpacking after the allowed free days of container storage.

Detention Tariff is defined as the charge levied by the carrier to the customers for not returning the empty container to the nominated empty depot after the expiry of the allowed free days. For example, the detention tariff is applied to the customers if they have not returned the empty container to the nominated empty depot after unpacking after the expiry of the allowed free days.
